Learner Differences: The teacher understands individual learner differences and cultural and linguistic diversity.
Reading Rate Assessment This assessment is done four times per year as well as when during IEP reevaluation. The reading goal for this student will be: When given a 4th grade passage student will read 131 words per minute with fewer than 6 errors. The current assessment of skills statement would be: Student can read at a 3rd grade level at 82.6 words per minute with 2 errors. This is valuable information that guides my instruction as I teach this student. Knowing that the text complexity needs to be within her reading range, allows for me to find and create text that will help this student to be successful within the general education classroom. Included in the testing each term is the San Diego Quick Assessment of Reading Ability. This is a formative assessment that aids in sight word fluency and tells us when students begin to struggle with sight words bases on their difficulty and grade level that the word might appear. This student did well up until the 6th grade words and began to struggle. These kinds of assessment guide me in making instructional decisions that will help not only this student but all the students in my classroom. |

This explicit instruction lesson I taught in my 7th grade reading and writing class. This was a front-loading activity to help them be successful in general education English classes. This was a useful exercise to help them to know how to write a sequence or series of steps about any topic. I had students write the series of steps or sequence in which you made a PB and J sandwich. I then asked for three volunteers to read their sequence and I would make a a PB and J based on exactly what they wrote on their papers. This was a fun lesson where students were engaged in writing, reading and assessing their progress. We did this three times and each time students became better at listing all the steps to making the ultimate PB and J Sandwich. This lesson gave all students the chance to work independently and with a partner to create the series of steps that would need to create this sandwich. Students worked hard to revise their sequence and show that through hard work they could be successful at creating the Ultimate PB&J sandwich and mastering the sequence text structure. This enabled them to be successful in their English class. |
