Scope and Sequence
This scope and sequence was worked on during summer collaboration. It has been valuable in helping to create student friendly essential questions. I Can Statements I can statements and helping students to connect to the content. It has been key in helping students to understand the language of the common core and how I use those standards to design instruction that is meaningful. Collaboration Working with the 8th grade team to create a working document that broke down the academic language of the core, has given us as a team the opportunity to evaluate the core, to the to build better lessons, and to help students to understand the standards that we are teaching. The time spent working on these documents was time well spent. |

Articles of the Week This activity provides students opportunity to work on annotating a text. This is useful in helping student to find the main idea, supporting details, claim, evidence, explanation of the evidence of that claim. It helps students to create short summaries and to reach deeper into a text to find hidden meaning. These two AoW's we read during our study of the book Prisoner B-3087. They we useful in creating opportunities for students to think critically about the text. We used the Shock article to talk about the influence of authority on behavior, and the misconceptions that could occur without a complete understanding of the bigger picture of the framework of the Holocaust and WW11. The concentration camp article gave students a framework of knowledge that helped them to deepen their understanding and to help them to see what the intent of the Germans during this time period in History, and how it applied to the book Prisoner B-3087. These created an dialogue of questions about why the Holocaust occurred and why didn't people step in and stop the Germans sooner. These two article helped students to inquire and wonder. They were able to think critically about this topic and the book Prisoner B-3087. |
Prisoner B-3078 Unit Vocabulary
RL:8:4-Determine the meanings of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings analyze the impact of specific word choices on meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts. Students needed to increase their funds of knowledge about the Holocaust, and WW11, by creating a list of vocabulary words that they would be encountering within the text of Prisoner B-3087, I hoped to help them to think critically about a different culture, time period and groups of people that were the oppressors and the oppressed. It helped them to understand the authors word choice, and how the words create a meaning in the text that is we as the reader seek after. |
